Medical Information
One of the primary responses to sexual violence is medical treatment for the victim. In many cases, victims present to an emergency care facility immediately following a sexual assault, but in some cases, they do not. While the primary focus of the information below is directed toward emergency medical response, medical management for sexual assault victims extends beyond the initial assault. Healthcare providers should be sensitive to the ongoing needs of a sexual assault victim including treatment for sexually transmitted infections, mental health referrals, trauma-related symptoms.
A victim should seek medical care regardless of how long ago a sexual assault occurred.
A medical examination has two primary purposes: 1) It provides immediate medical care by treating injuries, offering sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy information and 2) it serves as a means of collecting evidence.
