HIV Exposure

Kentucky has taken steps to ensure that sexual assault victims receive quality standardized care through the adoption of a statewide sexual assault medical protocol.  Traditionally, treatment included medication to prevent sexually transmitted infections.  However, because of the cost, side-effects, and other complicating factors, HIV prophylaxis (prevention treatment) has not been a part of the standard response. In 2005, Kentucky’s Attorney General issued an opinion that HIV prophylaxis is part of basic treatment in sexual assault.  The statewide Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Advisory Committee began the work to develop a protocol to address this treatment need and to provide guidance for treatment.  The protocol HIV NPEP Plan of Action for Victims of Sexual Assault in Kentucky created in partnership between the SART AC and the Kentucky AIDS Education Training Center provides an overview of assessment and treatment recommendations for victims of sexual violence.  This protocol includes information for medical care providers, pharmacists, and rape crisis center advocates including recommended treatment protocol, sample forms and policy, and a sample facts sheet for victims.

If you are a sexual assault victim and are concerned about potential exposure to HIV/AIDS, contact your medical provider as soon as possible. For an established protocol addressing HIV exposure, please refer to the HIV NPEP Plan of Action. Click here for a Patient Information Sheet
